Mise en Scene Considerations

Props:

Ouija board – this was a prop that needed to be made rather than bought. This was due to superstitions surrounding Ouija boards in general and the actors did not feel comfortable using a real, authentic Ouija board. Making the board required a level of skill with calligraphy due to the varying fonts needed for the board. There also needed to be some knowledge with the wood cutting and drilling machines to create the planchette. This prop will be a key focal point for the trailer as it is what the teens use to communicate with Lucy’s spirit.

Candles – This is both a prop and a contributing factor to the lighting. These candles are going to be used for the séance scenes involving the Ouija board. They will be creating a dark and unsettling atmosphere. Some will look distorted and melted to add to the distortion of the supernatural interacting with humans and how their lives are going to drastically change.

Setting:

There are several locations that are being considered for the film trailer. Firstly, there is the setting of the girl’s (Lucy’s) room, which needs to be dark. This would be to represent feelings of loneliness and despair. In addition to this location, some scenes will be shot in a school setting where the bullying occurs; this would include school corridors and car parks. Ideally, these shots will need to be rather secluded in order to show the vulnerability of Lucy when confronted by the bullies. There will also be shots within one of the bullies’ houses. This will feature a fireplace which will play a part within the tormenting of the bullies, as one of their faces is going to be melted.

Costume and make-up:

The costumes will be the clothing that ordinary teens wear for everyday wear, as this all occurs at a school/ hang out with friends. Prosthetics will be used to show the gore of the film. I will create a gelatine mask to make the face look melted as it can be heated and manipulates. In addition, I will be using liquid latex and makeup to create any cuts or wounds.
